What is a Fork Lift and How Are They Used? A practical and popular machine for moving products over short distances is the lift truck, one of the most important, yet overlooked, industrial innovations in modern times - best known for its prolific use in manufacturing and warehousing of products and also used in retail environments for product stocking and picking. Today, over 150,000 fork lifts are delivered to buyers each year. A forklift truck, a lift truck, a High/Low or a forklift and sideloader is a powered industrial truck used to lift and transport materials, normally by means of steel forks inserted under the load. Forklifts are most commonly used to move loads stored on pallets. Other forklift attachments offer other lifting options for your very valuable warehouse moving machine. The forklift was developed in the 1920s by various companies including the transmission manufacturing company Clark (today known as Clark Material Handling Company) and the hoist company Yale & Towne Manufacturing (today known as Yale Materials Handling Corporation). Lift trucks have since become an indispensable piece of equipment in manufacturing and warehousing operations.
Stand Up Rider Forklift: This forklift has a counterbalance weight in the body. The rider stands inside the body of the forklift. AKA: Electric or Gas Rider Counterbalanced Lift Truck Stand Up Rider Lift Truck: This forklift has straddle legs on both sides of the forks to provide stability in the absence of a counterweight in the body. AKA: Narrow Aisle Fork Lift Truck Stand Up Reach Rider Fork Lift: Another type of Narrow Aisle Lift Truck. Forks extend in and out as well as up, down and tilt. Order Picker (Stand Up Rider) Forklift: The operator stands on a platform in front and along with the controls is transported to the elevated location. Another type of Narrow Aisle Fork Lift. Sit Down Rider: This forklift has a counterbalance in the rear and is driven by a sitting operator. This lift truck can be gas, diesel or LP gas. Motorized Hand Pallet Jack: A low lift (ground level) unit has forks or a platform. Some models allow the operator to stand on the back (ride-on pallet jack). Others are simply walk-behind pallet jacks. Reach Forklift: This forklift typically has large pneumatic tires. It has a boom which raises and extends. It has outriggers at the front to stabilize the forklift on soft or uneven ground. Fork Lift Attachments: A variety of forklift attachments can be installed onto a forklift to extend the reach, clamp a barrel, act as hoist, lift oddly-shaped items, lift people or other tasks. Using an unapproved attachment could alter the forklift's lifting and balance characteristics and lead to a forklift overturning. Whenever an attachment is used that could affect the capacity of safe operation of a forklift, its use must be approved by the forklift manufacturer. The forklift must be marked to show the new weight with the attachment. The maximum capacity at the highest elevation must also be shown on the forklift's capability tag.
